How To: Manage Cruise

1.  Background

One common way for companies to track their production off a given tract of land is to use a 'cruise' to estimate the volume of wood suitable for harvesting on the tract.  A cruise may vary from a gross estimate of the volume of wood to a detailed estimate by species, product and sometimes grade.  Usually, the degree of detail is dictated by the varieties of wood on tract and the diversity in delivered prices.  Because some wood is high valued and other wood is less valued, an accurate cruise is essential when the wood is being purchased up front using a lump sum, as opposed to being paid for as it is harvested.

The Logger's Edge provides the ability to enter your cruise (at the level of detail you want) and then run a report that compares the cruise to actual deliveries as the tract is harvested.

2.    Steps Involved

Set  Cruise Flag

In the Basic Setup Window, the flag 'Enable Cruise' needs to be set.

Setting the cruise flag will enable an additional form as part of the block set up.

Enter  Cruise Volumes

In the block setup wizard you enter your cruise volumes (see above).  The cruise volumes can be based on species and/or product.

If you use grade as an attribute of your loads, you can also base your cruise on grade as well.

The volumes do not have to be in the same unit (say MBF), but can be mixed.  As shown in the window grid, saw logs are cruised based on MBF, but pulp is cruised based on cords.

This step is optional because your depletion rates are not tied to the individual cruise segments.  That is, this alternative allows you to set up depletion rates separate and apart from your cruise.

3.    Report

The cruise volume report provides a reconciliation of your cruise with your actual production:

The report shows:

The primary importance of this report is to allow you to monitor your actual production against your expected production.

Note than in the report if you have delivered volume that does not fit into one of your cruise categories, it will still be shown on the report with a cruise of 0.0 and tagged as 'Not Cruised'.   See rows 10 and 11 in the example above.  Thus, the report will show all delivered volume, whether cruised or not.
