How To: Split Loads

1.  Background

What is a split load?  A split load is a regular load that needs to be divided into different classes of wood.  For example, a load might contain two different species of logs (say pine and spruce), and you must pay a vendor, landowner, etc. differently based on the species of the wood.  In this case you would want to break the load into two parts: the pine part and the spruce part, where all attributes of the load would be the same, with the exception of the species and the weights.  You can always make this split happen by manually entering two tickets.  But, if you regularly deal with split loads, you should use the automated method to make split loads in The Logger's Edge.

2.  Steps Involved

Set Split Loads Flag

In the Basic Setup Window, the flag that enables 'Enable Automatic Split Loads' needs to be turned on.

Setting this flag will enable an additional button on the load slip window:

When entering a load in the load slip window, you would enter your first split:

You enter all the data for the first split.  You should enter the weight and/or volume of the first split and the fraction of the load that the split represents.  (The fractions for all the splits should add up to 1.0.)  The ticket number should be the ticket number for the load.

Your ticket number must not include a hyphen (-).  All other alphanumeric characters are OK.

Once you have completed your first split, click on the Add Split button in the bottom right corner of the load slip window.

Two Things happen when you click 'Add Split'

1.    The current load slip (split) is saved.  The Logger's Edge adds an incremental number to the ticket number (i.e. if the ticket number you entered was 51001, the load (split) slip will be saved with the ticket number 51001-1).

2.    A new load (split) slip is open in the load slip window.  The new load slip ticket number was incremented (i.e. the ticket number will be 51001-2) and the data from the first load slip is copied to the new load slip -- except for the Measurements fields that are cleared. All the entries in the new load window are locked and cannot be modified with the exception of the Measurements fields and the Other Details fields.

For each split you would change the split details - e.g. species, sort, grade, product, etc.

The trucking and date/time information is locked for each split.  The ticket number is incremented by 1.  For example, the format of the second split is XXXXXX-2.  You also enter the weighs/volume of the split and the fraction of the load.

You can add as many split loads as you wish.  After saving the loads you can view, modify and delete any split loads in the load slip grid.

In the grid below, there a three splits for a certain load.  As you can see each split has a distinct species and a different volume.  This allows you to pay each split separately -- for example you might have pay rates that vary by species of wood.  Because you can have as many splits as you want, you have the flexibility to apply a wide array of pay rates to any 'load' for a given activity (stumpage, harvesting, hauling, etc.).
